“Forgone Conclusion” Robert Griffin III Won’t Be Back With Redskins Next Year?

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, citing multiple sources within Redskins’ organization, reports that it’s a “forgone conclusion” that QB Robert Griffin III will not back be back in Washington next year.

La Canfora writes that “with the disconnect between him and the team’s decision-makers growing so great, and the desire to retain him so scant, that an offseason divorce is inevitable.”

Sources have told La Canfora that the situation is “beyond repair” and they believe Washington will likely end up trading him for draft picks next year. La Canfora has spoken with numerous executives around the league who also believe RGIII will be dealt.

However, La Canfora’s sources mentioned that the Redskins may only be able to acquire a conditional third-round pick at best in return for Griffin.

If that’s actually the best they can do for a former No. 2 overall pick whom they dealt three first-round picks for, they may want to hold onto him for another year and hope he figures it out rather than invite even more criticism for settling for this kind of compensation.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported earlier this morning that Washington hasn’t given up on RGIII due to the fact that they have already paid his salary for next season and they don’t expect him to force his way out.

Griffin, 24, still has another year remaining on his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $3,269,877 for the 2015 season.

Washington faces a tough decision regarding Griffin’s fifth-year option. However, his struggles this season make it seem unlikely that they will be willing to pick up this option given that it will run them close to $15 million for the 2016 season.

In five games, RGIII has thrown for 869 yards while completing 69.7 percent of his passes to go along with just two touchdowns and three interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Griffin as the No. 23 ranked quarterback out of 39.
