Giants Still Gathering Info On Jason Pierre-Paul, Won’t Have Deal In Place Before Deadline

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Giants are still working to gather more information regarding DE Jason Pierre-Paul and his injured hand.

• According to La Canfora, the two parties are “nowhere close to being in position to negotiate a long-term deal” by the 4 pm EST deadline to negotiate with franchise players.
• La Canfora adds that one option the Giants could pursue is to restructure Pierre-Paul’s one-year deal differently than the 17 game checks it would normally call for.

Previous reports have mentioned that Pierre-Paul would show up before Week 1’s game if the team agreed to pay him whether or not ends up on the non-football injury list.

There has been talk that JPP could be headed for the NFI list if he were to sign his franchise tender. Doing so would cost Pierre-Paul for the first six weeks of the season and the Giants could withhold his salary during this time.

This is among the reasons why Pierre-Paul has yet to sign his franchise tender and could wait to do so until there’s some sort of agreement regarding his salary.

Pierre-Paul, 26, played out his five-year, $20.05 million rookie contract that included $11,629,807 million guaranteed. The Giants wound up using their franchise tag on Pierre-Paul back in early March, which will pay him a fully guaranteed salary of $14.813 million for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Pierre-Paul recorded 77 tackles, 12.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a recovery over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 defensive end in a 4-3 system out of 59 qualifying players.
