Jay Gruden Reportedly “Done” With QB Robert Griffin III

Jason Reid of the Washington Post, citing multiple people within the Redskins’ organization, reports that HC Jay Gruden is “done” with QB Robert Griffin III.

Through three preseason games and five starts in the regular season, Gruden has seen enough to realize that Griffin is at best a long-term project as a pocket passer,” Reid writes.

According to Reid, Gruden also has “major concerns” about Griffin’s decision making off the field, which happens to be a topic that has come up with team officials.

Reid adds that if the decision to keep RGIII was up to Gruden, Washington would take whatever they could secure for Griffin in an offseason trade.

However, owner Dan Synder and president Bruce Allen will have a say in the matter as well. Reid believes that there is still a chance that Synder and Allen could Griffin one more shot at being the team’s starter, or possibly even hold out for a certain amount of compensation in a trade.

  • Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported last weekend that the Redskins may only be able to acquire a conditional third-round pick at best in return for Griffin.
  • Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported earlier this morning that Washington hasn’t given up on RGIII due to the fact that they have already paid his salary for next season and they don’t expect him to force his way out.

Griffin, 24, still has another year remaining on his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $3,269,877 for the 2015 season.

Washington still has the ability to pick up Griffin’s fifth-year option. However, his struggles this season make it seem unlikely that they will be willing to pick it up given that it will run them close to $15 million for the 2016 season.

In five games, RGIII has thrown for 869 yards while completing 69.7 percent of his passes to go along with just two touchdowns and three interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Griffin as the No. 23 ranked quarterback out of 39.
