Jets Officially Sign S Ed Reed

We bolstered our secondary THURS, agreeing to terms with Ed Reed a day after the veteran S cleared waivers.

Reed is expected to participate in the Jets Thursday practice. The fact that he spent time with Rex Ryan back in Baltimore some years ago should help him get acclimated much faster than with any other team.

Interestingly enough, Reed and the Jets will travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens next week.

• ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that the Jets were “on the verge” of signing Reed, so it appears as though the deal came together rather quickly.
• Jason La Canfora reports that Reed flew to New York last night and impressed GM John Idzik.
• La Canfora adds that Reed underwent a “lengthy physical” this morning and the Jets are reportedly “comfortable with his hip and health.“
• The Jets released OLB Ricky Sapp to make room

Reed, 35, was released by the Texans earlier this week, which comes just a few months after he signed a three-year contract worth $15 million and included $6 million guaranteed. He was recently demoted to the No. 3 safety and playing only in dime packages, which resulted in him playing just 12 snaps against the Cardinals in Week 11.

It will be interesting to see what kind of role he’ll play for the Jets in the coming weeks as there are some concerns about his overall ability at this point in time.
