Latest Regarding Chargers & First-Round DE Joey Bosa

The deadline for the Chargers to trade first-round DE Joey Bosa came and went on Tuesday without San Diego even considering the idea.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that if Joey Bosa doesn’t sign his rookie contract with the Chargers by today, he can’t be traded in 2016.

• However, Rapoport adds that NFL teams have no room in their rookie pools to sign Bosa to a contract after they addressed their own draft classes.
• Jason Cole of B/R reports that the Chargers and Bosa’s representatives still haven’t had any contract talks since July 28.

Bosa’s mother, Cheryl, mentioned that she wishes they “pulled an Eli Manning on draft day.”

“It bums me out for him so much,” she wrote on Facebook, via SDBoltReport.com. “Wish we pulled an Eli Manning on draft day.”

Last we heard regarding negotiations, Cole said that the Chargers have no plans to back off of their demands to include offset language in Bosa’s contract and the distribution of guaranteed money.

Cole mentions that the Chargers have taken the same approach to rookie contract for 20 years now, which includes notable players such as QB Philip Rivers and WR Keenan Allen. With this in mind, the Chargers are by no means strangers to holdouts involving first-round picks.

In general, sources around the league believe a battler over offset language “is stupid“, considering that a team is basically saying there’s a chance they may need to move on from him before his contract is up.

According to Ed Werder, the Chargers are sensitive to the perception of Bosa being only unsigned first-rounder creates, but they’re still unwilling to give in on his demands.

Previous reports have said that the two parties haven’t even spoken to one another for around a week now.

“We’re disappointed that he’s not here,” GM Tom Telesco said Friday. “We just have some small, fundamental differences that haven’t been resolved yet. But we’re still actively talking. We’re still actively working on it.”

Bosa, 20, was taken with the No. 3 overall pick by the Chargers. It was a bit of a surprise to see them grab Bosa, considering the amount of buzz that they were going to take either take Ronnie Stanley or DeForest Buckner.

However, Bosa gives them a solid pass-rushing prospect to develop in the coming years. The expectation right now is Bosa will see plenty of snaps at defensive end in their sub packages.

According to OverTheCap.com, Bosa will sign a four-year contract worth $25,873,672 to go along with a signing bonus of $17,017,216 once they’ve reached an agreement on the contract specifics. The contract will include a fifth-year option for the team to consider in 2019.

During his three-year career at Ohio State, Bosa recorded 148 tackles, 51 tackles for a loss, 26 sacks, five forced fumbles, an interception, two fumble recoveries, and six pass defenses.
