Mike Holmgren Committed To Colt McCoy

Browns president Mike Holmgren restated his support for Colt McCoy being the teams’ starting quarterback next season during an interview with Seattle radio station KJR on Tuesday, per Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland .

Before the start of the offseason, the Cleveland Browns appeared to be one of the most likely teams to address their quarterback situation, but that did not prove to be the case. The general consensus was that Cleveland would end up with either Robert Griffin III or Matt Flynn, but after losing out to the Redskins for the rights to the #2 overall pick, the Browns showed no interest in pursuing Flynn.

Cleveland is still expected to consider taking a quarterback at some point during the upcoming draft, but Grossi mentions that they’re unlikely to grab a quarterback in the first-two rounds. This is obviously great news for McCoy and Seneca Wallace as they’ll have a shot to win the starting job next season but I’m sure that Browns fans were hoping for something else.

  1. It’s about time he’s coming to his senses. They need playmakers and offensive linemen. Colt McCoy was not the main problem last year. He was learning a new system, he was throwing the ball 45-50 times a game because he had not running game, and he was running for his life every snap. Give the man another chance. Next year’s draft has good quarterbacks in it too.

    • That’s how I feel. Colt McCoy wasn’t bad last season. The rest of the offense was terrible though. Hillis was injured all season and they have one of the worst receiving cores in the league. If the Browns address the skill positions in the draft (Richardson & Wright/Blackmon & Miller), McCoy can make strides. And if he doesn’t, there’s always Matt Barkley.
