NFL Notes: Chad Kelly, Chargers, Panthers, Raiders

Chad Kelly

  • Ian Rapoport reports that Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly has been cleared by Dr. James Andrews for a 35-45 play script at his upcoming Pro Day.
  • According to Rapoport, Kelly will be 85 percent recovered from his ACL tear by Ole Miss’ Pro Day.

Chargers

  • Eric D. Williams considers LSU safety Jamal Adams to be an “ideal fit” for the Chargers, who are looking for some help at the safety position.
  • Williams mentions that Adams offers versatility and the ability play the run at the line of scrimmage. However, he isn’t sure that Adams will be available to Los Angeles at No. 7 overall.
  • If Adams is gone, Williams suggests Ohio State’s Malik Hooker as another safety worth considering for the Chargers.
  • A quarterback prospect worth watching for the Chargers, according to Williams, could be Pittsburgh’s Nathan Peterman. L.A. had OC Ken Whisenhunt in attendance for Peterman’s Pro Day. They also held a private worth with Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes, which included Whisenhunt, HC Anthony Lynn and QBs coach Shane Steichen.

Panthers

Panthers HC Ron Rivera tells Judy Battista of NFL Media that QB Cam Newton will be ready for the season opener “without a doubt.

Without a doubt,” Rivera said at the Annual League Meeting in Phoenix. “There is no concern, at least in talking with the trainers and doctors. I’m very confident that things are going to go along very well. They have a timeframe that they’ve mapped out for the most part. He’ll be working with the trainers and he’ll be working with us for the most part during the OTAs and minicamps.

Rivera explained that their plan for Newton was to wait and see how he healed, but they elected to have him undergo the procedure, given where they were in the calendar.

“Well, I think what happened is the doctor is looking at the MRI and their decision (was) to see if it would heal on its own,” Rivera explained. “You don’t really want to go in on a quarterback and do the surgery, at least that’s I think what the understanding was. He had been having such a good offseason, and then it just kind of plateaued I guess.

“There was a little bit of thought that ‘you know what, now’s a good time if any if we’re going to do it,’ so that’s what they decided. It’s not like it’s a major surgery thing that has to be done from my understanding. It should be one of those things that should really be done and it should heal up quickly.”

Raiders

  • Daniel Kaplan reports that the Raiders’ relocation resolution pegs the cost of the Las Vegas stadium at just under $1.7 billion, which is less than previous reports have said.
  • Interestingly enough, Kaplan says that the resolution includes another $200 million of public funds for capital improvements at the stadium, which is in addition to the $750 million of public contributions.
  • According to Albert Breer, this $200 million will take care of infrastructure around the stadium.
  • Andrew Brandt calls this the “deal of the century” for the Raiders.
