NFL Notes: Derrius Guice, Arden Key, Falcons

Derrius Guice

New Redskins RB Derrius Guice admitted that he was surprised he dropped all the way down to No. 59 overall.

“It did surprise me because a lot of the things came out of nowhere and weren’t true,” Guice said, via ESPN.com. “I just didn’t understand why me, out of all people, because I’m great to everybody, I have a great personality and I just didn’t understand why everything just hit so hard with me out of everybody.”

Redskins HC Jay Gruden said they got a “pretty good indication” of who Guice is after doing their background work on him.

“We looked at the reports and talked to Derrius’ agent and got a pretty good indication that we felt good about taking Derrius at that position,” Gruden said. “Lucky to get him. This is a hard-nosed runner, plays hard, he can catch the football, he can pass protect, he’s got good vision and a guy we really liked in the early rounds.

We got to know Derrius quite well. He’s quite the character,” Gruden added. “He’s got a great personality, loves football and is going to be a great competitor for this football team. We know that.

“We felt like he fit in just fine. Love his talent. At the end of the day it’s all about the skill set he has … .”

Arden Key

After dropping to the third round and being selected by the Raiders, former LSU DE Arden Key says he’s a first-round talent.

I know that I’m not a third-round pick,” Key said, via the San Jose Mercury News. “I’m a first-round talent. Top five. I went through some situations that caused me to be a third-round pick. I’ve learned from those things, and this is the consequence of me going through what I went through. I’m a better person now than what I was prior, and I’m just happy to be at the right place.

Falcons

Falcons WR Julio Jones caused a stir on social media last week after removing everything to do with the team from his accounts.

According to Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff, they’re in a “great spot” with Jones.

“Julio and the organization are doing very well,” Dimitroff said, via Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com. “I’m not concerned one bit about any of the social media. I think we’re in a great spot. He had very good discussions with [coach] Dan [Quinn]. And we’re in a great spot.”
