Panthers Releasing Veteran S Kurt Coleman

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Panthers are releasing veteran S Kurt Coleman on Monday to clear some playing time for their younger players.

Coleman, 29, is a former seventh-round pick of the Eagles back in 2010. He spent four years with the Eagles before joining the Chiefs for the 2014 season.

The Panthers signed him to a contract a year later and eventually signed him to a four-year, $18.2 million contract that included $7 million guaranteed in 2016.

Coleman was set to make base salaries of $3.5 million and $3.75 million over the final two years of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Coleman will free up $2.65 million of available cap space while creating $2.5 million in dead money.

In 2017, Coleman appeared in 12 games for the Panthers and recorded 76 tackles, a fumble recovery and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 76 safety out of 87 qualifying players.
