Chargers RB Melvin Gordon Out A Few Weeks With Grade 2 MCL Sprain

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that Chargers RB Melvin Gordon suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain and will miss a few weeks. The good news, however, is that Gordon should return later on in the season.

Eric Williams reports that the initial diagnosis for Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is that he has an MCL injury.

Williams adds that the plan for Gordon is to have him undergo further evaluation on Monday. However, there’s a real possibility he could miss their Week 13 game against the Steelers.

Following Sunday’s win over the Cardinals, Chargers HC Anthony Lynn told reporters that Gordon’s knee is swollen and they aren’t sure what the issue is specifically at this time.

“His knee is swollen right now,” Lynn said, via NFL.com. “We don’t know exactly what it is. We’ll get a further evaluation tomorrow, and we’ll go from there.”

Gordon, 25, is a former first-round pick out of Wisconsin by the Chargers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year $10.669 million rookie contract that is fully guaranteed and is set to earn a base salary of $1,889,967 for the 2018 season.

The Chargers picked up Gordon’s fifth-year option this past May worth $5,605,000 for the 2019 season.

Entering today’s game, Gordon has appeared in nine games for the Chargers and rushed for 741 yards on 143 carries (5.2 YPC) to go along with 42 receptions for 448 yards receiving and 11 total touchdowns.
