Redskins Had RGIII Working As A Safety With Scout Team This Week

Jeff Darlington of NFL Media reports that the Redskins had QB Robert Griffin III working with their scout team this week as a safety.

Darlington reported earlier in the day that the Redskins are planning for RGIII to be the team’s No. 3 quarterback this season in order to prevent him from sustaining an injury. However, the news that they have him working at safety makes you wonder why they’re even keeping him at all.

According to Darlington, it’s not unprecedented for a third-team quarterback to handle such a duty during practice.

In the event RGIII were to sustain an injury, the Redskins would be forced to pay him his $16.2 million salary for 2016.

Team sources have told Darlington that they are keeping Griffin on their roster because of the financial investment they’ve already made in him for 2015.

It’s already clear that Griffin won’t see game action, barring an unforeseen turn of events.

Some have made the case for the Redskins to just cut RGIII loose now that he has been cleared from his concussion, which would prevent them from being on the hook for his $16.2 million salary in 2016. On top of that, it would give both of them a fresh start.

Griffin, 25, is in the final year of his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $3,269,877 for the 2015 season. Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million several months ago.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 precent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.
