Redskins Starting Robert Griffin III In Week 16

Redskins HC Jay Gruden announced Monday that the plan is for Robert Griffin III to be team’s starting quarterback in Week 16, per Dianna Marie Russini.

  • Gruden mentioned that RGIII played with “good energy” on Sunday and was overall pleased with his performance.

“I’d like to see him improve and hopefully there wont be any debate…this is Robert’s team now,” Gruden said, per Russini.

Griffin finished Sunday’s game completing 18-of-27 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown while contributing another 46 yards rushing and what appeared to be a touchdown that was later overturned.

RGIII replaced Colt McCoy on Washington’s second drive after McCoy was forced to exit Sunday’s game with a neck injury.

It’s really been crazy to see how this season has played out for RGIII and the Redskins. They gone through periods where all three of their quarterbacks were considered to be the clear starter only to lose the job due to injury and/or poor performance.

On top of that, there have been conflicting reports about Griffin’s future in Washington and the support he has within the organization.

Griffin, 24, has another year remaining on his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $3,269,877 for the 2015 season.

Washington still has the ability to pick up Griffin’s fifth-year option. However, his struggles this season make it seem unlikely that they will be willing to pick it up given that it will run them close to $15 million for the 2016 season.
