Report: 49ers Undecided About Picking Up OLB Aldon Smith’s 2015 Option

Ian Rapoport reports that the 49ers are undecided about picking up OLB Aldon Smith‘s fifth-year option at this point in time.

  • Rapoport adds that the 49ers won’t cut Smith given that his 2014 salary is guaranteed and releasing him would only accelerate his signing bonus.

Smith was detained at the Los Angeles Airport yesterday for allegedly yelling “bomb” while in the airport. He was later released from jail on $20,000 bond for making a false bomb threat.

This is hardly the type of situation that’s going to help him secure a long-term contract or convince San Francisco to pick up the fifth-year option worth over $9 million is guaranteed.

To make matters worse, Smith has a separate court date coming up for a previous DUI and felony weapons charges. League disciple remains an option for Smith.

The 49ers will have until May 3 to decide what to do with in regards to Smith’s option.

Smith, 24, appeared in 11 games last year and totaled 34 tackles and 8.5 sacks.
