Report: John Dorsey’s Communication, Management Style Part Of Chiefs’ Decision To Fire Him

Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation tell Terez A. Paylor that the Chiefs’ decision to fire GM John Dorsey was fueled, in part, by concerns regarding his internal communication and management styles.

A source told Paylor that Dorsey had removed two front-office executives without much explanation: “John does stuff and doesn’t tell people why.”

However, Dorsey and HC Andy Reid still worked well together, according to one of Paylor’s sources: “You never got the impression they were sparring.”

During the offseason, the Chiefs somewhat surprisingly decided to fire director of football administration Trip MacCracken and director of pro scouting Will Lewis without much of an explanation for why these moves were made.

“Those decisions were totally John’s,” a source told Paylor. “That’s the kind of stuff he does.”

Overall, Dorsey’s management still wore on some while others told Paylor that they enjoyed working for him. While the Chiefs made the decision to move on from him, Dorsey remains a well-respected NFL evaluator around the NFL.

“I loved him,” one league source tells Paylor of Dorsey. “Blunt, honest and a great talent evaluator. Losing him and [Chris] Ballard in one offseason is insane.”

After the news surfaced that Dorsey was out in Kansas City, speculation about a possible return to the Packers began to circulate. However, Charles Robinson reported that after speaking with sources around the league, it sounds like the eventual successor for Packers GM Ted Thompson will likely be either Eliot Wolf, Russ Ball or Brian Gutekunst and not Dorsey.

Robinson added that bringing Dorsey back would likely ruffle some feathers within the Packers organization, as they already have executives grinding away and his return could be a “touchy” move for them to make.

Dorsey, 56, was hired as the Chiefs GM back in 2013 and paired him with Reid. During his four years with the Chiefs, Dorsey’s teams had a record of 43-21 (67.2 percent), which includes three playoff appearances.

We’ll have more regarding where Dorsey could land as the news is available.
