Texans Expected To Keep Matt Schaub “For A While”

Update:

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans will hold onto veteran QB Matt Schaubfor a while.

It’s been widely assumed that the Texans would be parting ways with the Schaub, but they could hold off until later in the offseason to make a decision regarding him.

The Browns and Raiders are reportedly the two teams with the most interest in Schaub.

Schaub, 32, has three years remaining on his five-year, $66.15 million contract. The Texans owe him a base salary of $10 million to go along with $1 million in per-game roster bonuses next season.

It’s been widely assumed that the Texans would try to get out from underneath Schaub’s $14.125 million cap figure and take the savings, even though they would free up just $3.625 million by releasing him, according to OverTheCap.com.

Last year, Schaub appeared in 10 games for the Texans last season and threw for 2,310 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Ian Rapoport mentions that it won’t being surprising to see Matt Schaub end up with the Browns.

  • Rapoport adds that Schaub could join Brian Hoyer as the team’s top-two quarterbacks next season.

Recent reports have mentioned that the Raiders have the “most interest” in Schaub of any of the available quarterbacks, even though Schaub is still under contract with the Texans.

Jerry McDonald reports that the Oakland Raiders have the “most interest” in Texans QB Matt Schaub.

  • Vic Tafur adds that the Raiders are waiting to see what happens with Schaub as of now.
  • According to Tafur, the Raiders are also interested in QB Josh Freeman.

Freeman, 26, is coming off of a tumultuous season to say the least. After essentially being run out of Tampa Bay, Freeman signed on with the Minnesota Vikings, but only made one start and was atrocious during that game. Freeman never saw the field after that and report later came out that he had suffered a concussion during that game.

There really hasn’t been a lot of buzz surrounding Freeman in recent weeks, so it could take a few weeks before we have an idea of where he could end up.
