The San Diego Chargers will be releasing former Pro Bowl linebacker Shawn Merriman in the coming weeks and there is no shortage of suitors for him once he becomes available. Merriman will have to go through the waiver wire process before he becomes a free agent so teams will bad records will get the first shot at claiming him.
Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune writes that despite the teams interest in acquiring him during this years draft, the Saints may be reluctant to bring in a player that is considered to be “damaged goods” and has a history of the off-the-field issues.
The San Francisco 49ers were considered to be a likely destination because of they will will have one of the first chances to claim him. The Houston Texans are in need of linebacker help after they lost Demeco Ryans for the season. Other speculative options could be the Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins and Green Bay Packers.
