Steelers Pick Up $5.39M Of Cap Space By Reworking DE Cameron Heyward’s Contract

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Steelers created $5.39 million of cap space in recent days by converting $8.085 million of DE Cameron Heyward‘s $9 million base salary into a signing bonus.

The Steelers had to make a move like this, given that they were so close to the cap.

Heyward, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Steelers back in 2011. He’s currently in the fourth year of his six-year, $59.2 million contract that included $15 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $9 million and $8.75 million over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2017, Heyward appeared in 15 games for the Steelers and recorded 45 tackles, 12 sacks, two forced fumbles, a recovery and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 8 interior defender out of 123 qualifying players.
