Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that the 49ers want to retain DL Arik Armstead, who will be a free agent in the coming weeks, and the two parties are currently working to get an extension done.
Armstead had come up as a potential franchise tag candidate this offseason. However, it appears as though the 49ers would prefer to get a long-term deal done now in advance of free agency.
Armstead, 26, is a former first-round pick out of Oregon by the 49ers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was in the final year of his four-year, $9.84 rookie contract when the 49ers elected to pick up Armstead’s fifth-year option for the 2019 season.
Armstead is now in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020 for the first time in his NFL career.
In 2019, Armstead appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers and recorded 54 tackles, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles, a recovery and two passes defended.
We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
