49ers Place Rookie ILB Chris Borland On Season-Ending I.R. & Promote OLB Chase Thomas

The San Francisco 49ers have placed rookie ILB Chris Borland on on season-ending injured reserve Saturday, due to an ankle injury, per Eric Branch.

  • The 49ers also promoted OLB Chase Thomas from their practice squad.

This comes as no surprise as Borland was expected to miss the team’s final two regular season games.

Borland, 23, put together a very impressive first year after the San Francisco lost Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman for the season.

He finishes the year with 107 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and five pass defenses over the course of 14 games. As of now, Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 3 inside linebacker out of 59 qualifying players.

It will be interesting to see how the 49ers get him involved next year with so much depth at inside linebacker.
