Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers are rewarding head coach Kyle Shanahan with a brand new six-year contract that replaces the three years he had remaining on his current deal.
According to Schefter, Shanahan’s new contract makes him one of the NFL’s five highest-paid head coaches and will keep him in San Francisco through the 2025 season.
Schefter mentions that 49ers owner Jed York and Shanahan sat down and quickly determined that they wanted to continue working together for the foreseeable future.
A report from back in February mentioned that Shanahan and GM John Lynch were in line for new deals at some point this offseason, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.
The 49ers have attempted to tie Shanahan and Lynch together, which means Lynch could be next for a new contract.
Shanahan, 40, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers as an offensive quality control coordinator back in 2004. He later joined the Texans in 2006 and worked his way up to offensive coordinator before joining his father’s coaching staff with the Redskins in 2010.
After one season with the Browns, Shanahan departed and accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Falcons. Th4 49ers hired him as their head coach for the 2017 season.
Shanahan and Lynch have led the team to a record of 23-25 (47.9) to go along with two playoff wins over the course of three seasons.
