49ers Officially Pick Up DB Jimmie Ward’s Fifth-Year Option

The San Francisco 49ers announced Monday that they have officially exercised the fifth-year option on DB Jimmie Ward .

The fifth-year option will run the 49ers $8,526,000 million for the 2018 season, according to Joel Corry, but is guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.

Ward, 25, was taken with the No. 30 overall pick back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $7.112 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $690,000 for the 2017 season.

In 2016, Ward appeared in 11 games and recorded 54 tackles, one sack, an interception, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and 12 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 cornerback out of 111 qualifying players.
