AFC East Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Jets

Bills

Bills HC Sean McDermott told reporters Tuesday that WR Zay Jones‘ recent arrest was “disappointing” and he’s hoping this will be a learning lesson for him.

“It’s an unfortunate situation. It’s somewhat disappointing,” McDermott said, per Mike Rodak. “But it’s a situation, to me, that we can all take something from and learn from it.

McDermott added that he does not “foresee” discipline from the team for Jones regarding this matter.

This is the time of year … where things happen. It’s unfortunate,” McDermott said. “You would like the ability to have some form of structure, but those are the rules that are set forth, and we abide by those rules. This is the time of year that you just need to find a routine and stay disciplined with your routine.”

  • McDermott said he is “excited” about QBs A.J. McCarron and Nate Peterman and mentioned that Peterman has worked with the “quarterback-type guys out there” and is looking to make a jump in his second season. (Mike Rodak)

Dolphins

  • Dolphins HC Adam Gase admitted that moving on from players such as DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be a tough adjustment for them: “Obviously when you have players that have left, the caliber of guys we’ve had, we know we’re not going to replace one guy with one guy.” (Miami Herald)
  • Gase said “I’d like to get a quarterback as much as anybody else,” when he’s asked if they’re definitely drafting one. Although, he later added: “We’re not going to pick a quarterback to pick a quarterback. We have to make sure we get the right one for us.
  • Regarding QB Ryan Tannehill, Gase said he’s “ready to go.
  • Gase said he admires Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield and believes they’re “close in personality probably”: “Whatever it is he wants to win. He always wants to do a little bit more. I’ve enjoyed the amount of time I’ve spent with him.
  • According to Gase, veteran DE William Hayes underwent back surgery for an issue that had been lingering for some time. (Adam Beasley)

Jets

Vikings HC Mike  Zimmer said at the owners meeting on Tuesday that the reports he received from their medical staff regarding QB Teddy Bridgewaterweren’t as positive as I was about it.

“The reports I’d get back from the medical people weren’t as positive as I was about it,” Zimmer said, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “That’s kind of how it came down is that his knee wasn’t as … he still has some recovery to do. When I watched him in practice he moved well, I didn’t see limitations but from what I was told there was some.

  • Jets HC Todd Bowles said Josh McCown will be the No. 1 quarterback this summer. “Josh will go into it as the starter. By the end of training camp, we’ll see who the starter is.” (Rich Cimini)
  • Bowles said of Christian Hackenberg: “He’s a quarterback on our team. Again, competition. Everybody’s subject to competition to earn the job and not earn the job. Christian’s on our team. Regardless of who we bring in or how we bring them in, the competition’s got to be there for everybody.” (Manish Mehta)
  • According to Bowles, they have “six or seven” players worthy of the No. 3 pick right now. (Rich Cimini)
  • Bowles mentioned that the signing of Terrelle Pryor isn’t a threat to Robby Anderson. (Calvin Watkins)
  • Bowles said he’s “hopeful” WR Quincy Enunwa can get some work in this spring. (Connor Hughes)
  • The Jets will add another kicker at some point to go along with Cairo Santos, according to Bowles. (Rich Cimini)
