AFC Notes: Aaron Glenn, Greg Dulcich, Bengals, Dolphins, Jets

Bengals

Bengals’ veteran TE Mike Gesicki has eight receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns through the first three games of the season. Cincinnati HC Zac Taylor said Gesicki has developed unique chemistry with Joe Burrow, which is similar to Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce‘s relationship on the Chiefs.

“You kind of laugh, because you do call a play in practice and it’s not gonna be the same for everybody, but Mike’s gonna do his deal,” coach Zac Taylor said, via Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic. “It’s very similar to (Travis) Kelce when you watch it on tape. You don’t know what the route was that they ran because they just had good chemistry. And Mike’s very much that way. We trust him to do it, and as long as Joe is on the same page with him and the body language, then it works out well for us.”

Taylor mentioned that Gesicki provides their offense a rare combination of size and speed, calling him a “tremendous weapon” for their offense.

“I just think with that size, to be able to run like he does, torque like he does and the matchups that he gets,” Taylor said. “If you’re playing nickel, your nickel is usually on the slot receiver. So now he’s in there with safeties and backers. So when you do get man, he’s a tremendous weapon. When it’s zone, he’s got a really good feel for the zones that he’s attacking. He’s really found his groove in Year 3 for him here.”

Gesicki said WRs Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins were big reasons why he wanted to join the Bengals in 2024.

“That’s another reason I wanted to come here, was because of the guys on the outside, it makes the middle of the field sometimes more accessible and it is not like in other schemes where it is like, all right, we have to force feed those guys,” Gesicki said.

Dolphins

Dolphins HC Jeff Hafley said he hopes to get TE Greg Dulcich more involved in the offense regularly.

“I hope so,” Hafley said, via Dolphins Wire. “I mean, when he threw it up and he caught it, I was pretty fired up. Greg needs to be more involved in the offense as we go, and it could be maybe he was open and we didn’t see it. Maybe he wasn’t open when we were supposed to throw it to him, so it’s not intentional that we’re not throwing him the football. But hopefully he continues to get more involved because I think he’s a really talented player and he’s really good at catch and run.”

Jets

Jets HC Aaron Glenn said competing with Bears HC Ben Johnson every day during practice when they were with the Lions made them both better head coaches.

“We were so competitive in move the ball situations on how we wanted to beat each other, but it made both of us better, I will say that,” Glenn said, via PFT. “He’s a damn good coach.”

Glenn added that he and Johnson regularly coordinated and game-planned against each other, which helped them understand both sides of the ball.

“When you have coordinators, offensive and defensive coordinators, you’re really planning practice,” Glenn said. “You’re really planning the things you want to see against each other so the communication between me and him was always outstanding…just talking offensive and defensive football was good to have.”
