Jets

The Jets reportedly had concerns about Baylor HC Matt Rhule’s coaching staff and wanted him to have a more experienced offensive coordinator with NFL play-calling experience to work with QB Sam Darnold.

Manish Mehta reports that the Jets suggested Rhule hire Buccaneers OC Todd Monken, who also interviewed for the Jets’ head coach job, but Rhule wanted to bring his hand-picked play-caller with him.

Rhule explained in an interview with KRZI-AM 1660 Waco on Thursday that he wasn’t going to get into an arranged marriage.

At the end of the day, I’m never going to be in an arranged marriage,” Rhule said. “I’m never going to subcontract jobs to the offense and defense. I always want to hire people that believe in what I believe, that are going to do things our way, that are going to believe in process, that are going to be part of a program. I truly believe that programs win.”

Texans

Texans impending free agent DL Christian Covington says he would “love to be back” in Houston next year.

I have been in Houston for eight years, I’d love to be back,” Covington said, via Houston Chronicle. “This is my first time testing free agency, so it’s new territory for me. We’ll see what happens. I’ve got faith in God and in the process of how everything turns out.”

“I hope it’s not the end,” Covington said. “Houston truly has been my second home. I’ve only known two cities in my life, Vancouver and Houston, so I would love to not know a third. But you never know how things will turn out. We understand the business aspect of football.”
