AFC South Notes: Colts, Texans, Titans

Colts

  • After being traded to the Colts for a first-round pick, DT DeForest Buckner spoke about his new opportunity with the team: “It’s kind of a win-now mentality,” Buckner said, via Kevin Bowen. “We landed Philip Rivers and I am just excited for the mentality of the team moving forward. Obviously, two years ago they were 10-6 and last year took a hit obviously losing their franchise quarterback to retiring early. But you still saw last year they were in a bunch of close games that came down to the last play down there and just came up short.”

Texans

  • New Texans WR Randall Cobb said of signing with Houston: “I still don’t have a ring. I want to be in a situation where I have that possibility. When you look at Deshaun (Watson), he has tremendous ability and he’s a winner. He has the ability to take us to a Super Bowl. I want to be a part of that.” (Aaron Wilson)
  • As for his role with the Texans, Cobb said: “It was pretty much coach (Bill) O’Brien, he told me how I thought I would fit in the offense, a veteran presence I could bring to the team.” (Aaron Wilson)
  • Cobb explained that he isn’t looking to be a direct replacement to DeAndre Hopkins: “With Deandre (Hopkins) leaving there’s going to be a lot of eyes on all three of us (Will Fuller, Kenny Stills). A lot of people look at me as being a replacement even though DeAndre and I are totally different players.” (Aaron Wilson)
  • Cobb said he drew interest from a few teams and receives offers from the Cowboys and Texans: “Tough decision to make. Hearing what my agent (Jimmy Sexton) was telling me about coach Bill O’Brien and the opportunity was one of the main reasons I jumped at the offer.” (Aaron Wilson)
  • According to Cobb, he hasn’t taken his physical yet or officially signed his three years, $27 million contract, but is in California training. (Aaron Wilson)
  • Texans CB Phillip Gaines‘ one-year, $1.047 million deal still includes a $137,500 signing bonus, $910,000 base salary and qualifies for the veteran salary benefit. (Aaron Wilson)

Titans
