Alex Smith Hoping To Be Back With Chiefs, But Understands He Could Be Playing Elsewhere

Chiefs QB Alex Smith tells Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star that he’s hoping to be back in K.C. for the 2018 season, but he’s well aware of the circumstance and the fact that this is a business.

โ€œI hope to stay there โ€” I love where Iโ€™m at. I love the guys, I love the situation, but who knows?โ€ Smith said. โ€œObviously this is a business. Iโ€™m not going to be ignorant of anything or naive to anything.โ€

Smith is a popular name mentioned as a trade option for teams in need of a quarterback this offseason and says he’s aware of the speculation about his future.

โ€œObviously, thereโ€™s a lot of speculation out there on whatโ€™s going to happen, what could happen,โ€ Smith said. โ€œI donโ€™t think anybody totally knows.โ€

The Chiefs have first-round pick Patrick Mahomes waiting to take over as the team’s starting quarterback and this seems like a pretty good time to trade Smith to a team looking for an upgrade at quarterback.

Kansas City gave up two second-round picks for Smith back in and they should be able to recoup a good portion of that in a trade this offseason.

Potential landing spots for the Smith that have been tossed out include the Cardinals, Broncos, Browns and Jaguars.

Smith,ย 33, is a former first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2005. After seven years in San Francisco, Smith was traded to the Chiefs in 2013.

Smith is in the fourth year of his five-year, $76 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $10.8 million for the 2017 season.

In 2017, Smith appeared in 15 games for the Chiefs and threw for 4,042 yards while completing 67.5 percent of his passes to go along with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 355 yards and a touchdown. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Smith as the news is available.
