Mike Garafolo of NFL Media confirms a report from the Boston Globe that Bill Belichick is expected to call defensive players for the Patriots in 2019 and serve as the team’s de facto defensive coordinator.
However, Garafolo has been told that nothing is set in stone right now and their plan is to go into OTAs and minicamp try some things out with the coaching staff to see what makes the most sense for them.
The Patriots don’t have a lot of experienced coaches on the defensive side of the ball.
Brett Bielema has been mentioned as a possible name to watch to serve as defensive coordinator, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Belichick run the unit this year before considering any promotions.
Garafolo says that the Patriots are high on former LB Jerod Mayo, but he’s just getting started in his coaching career.
Belichick last called plays for New England back in 2010.
We’ll have more regarding the Patriots as the news is available.
