In an interview with reporters, Bills CB Tre’Davious White said he’s still considering opting out of the 2020 season, per Marcel Louis-Jacques.
White said he’s concerned about being able to keep his family, including two young children, save while still playing football during a pandemic.
“At the end of the day, no matter what, my family is always going to come first. … My kids are always going to come first,” he said via Vic Carucci.
White has until Thursday at 4 p.m. to make his decision. If he opts out, he would be the highest-profile player to make that decision as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and a defensive player of the year candidate in 2019.
The Bills exercised White’s fifth-year option this offseason and he’s eligible for what will surely be a major contract extension when the time comes.
White, 25, is a former first-round pick by the Bills in the 2017 NFL Draft out of LSU. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $10,091,110 rookie contract and set to make a base salary of $1,841,060 in 2020.
In 2019, White appeared in 15 games and recorded 58 total tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 17 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 18 overall cornerback out of 112 qualifying players.
We’ll have more on White as the news is available.
