Josina Anderson reports that free agent CB Chris Harris plans to sign with the Chargers.
Harris says he signed a two-year deal worth more than $20 million with the Chargers, turning down a three-year offer from the Raiders, per Mike Klis. Harris added he was drawn to the talent Los Angeles already has on defense.
“I liked the Chargers’ defense. Bosa, Ingram, Casey Hayward, Derwin James, Desmond King. I like their secondary. I’ll fit right in with those boys,” he said.
Harris had been linked to several teams in recent days including the Jets, Eagles, Lions, Saints, Cowboys, Jets, Raiders and Bills. However, it appears as though the Chargers stepped up to close the deal at the start of free agency.
The Chargers have some solid defensive backs already, so the addition of Harris should give them one of the top secondaries in the NFL.
Harris, 30, wound up signing on with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas back in 2011. He has played all seven years of his NFL career in Denver.
Harris was entering the final year of his five-year, $42.5 million contract that included a $10 million signing bonus and was set to make a base salary of $7.8 million for the 2019 season when Denver signed him to a new, one-year, $12.05 million deal last offseason.
In 2019, Harris appeared in all 16 games for the Broncos and recorded 56 total tackles, one forced fumble, one interception and six pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 34 cornerback out of 113 qualifying players.
