Browns Releasing TE Darren Fells

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that the Browns are releasing veteran TE Darren Fells on Sunday.

The Browns had been shopping Fells in trade talks, but it appears as though no deal surfaced.

According to Manish Mehta, the Jets have had internal discussions about adding Fells, as they’re looking for a blocking tight end this offseason.

Fells, 32, originally signed on with the Seahawks back in 2013. He spent just a few months in Seattle before he was waived at the start of the 2013 season and later signed by the Cardinals.

After a few years in Arizona, Fells signed a one-year contract with the Lions for the 2017 season. From there, he agreed to a three-year contract worth $12 million with the Browns last year.

Fells was set to make a base salary of $2.65 million for the 2019 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Fells will free up $2.3 million of available cap space while creating $1.4 million in dead money.

In 2018, Fells appeared in all 16 games for the Browns and caught 11 passes for 117 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 31 tight end out of 70 qualifying players.
