The Arizona Cardinals announced Saturday that they’ve waived former first-round DL Robert Nkemdiche.
Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury said earlier in the week that Nkemdiche arrived to training camp “out of shape.”
“Not in shape, I guess. That’s kind of where weโll leave it,” Kingsbury said. “He’s on PUP and he’s working through that. When he is cleared, we’ll work with him.”
Arizona later placed him on the active/PUP list, but it appears as though they felt it was best to simply move on from him.
Nkemdiche, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2016. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $7.6 million contract and set to make a base salary of $1,122,808 for the 2019 season.
Arizona declined Nkemdiche’s fifth-year option back in May. He was in line be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing will Nkemdiche free up $1,622,808 of available cap space while creating $1,113,744 in dead money.
In 2018, Nkemdiche appeared in 10 games for the Cardinals and recorded 32 tackles, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defense.
