Cardinals Have “Strong Interest” In Mike McCarthy, But Unlikely To Be Match

Jim Trotter reports that the Cardinals have “strong interest” in Mike McCarthy, but it’s unlikely the two parties are a match.

Trotter says that McCarthy has family considerations that are likely to keep him closer to Green Bay.

On Sunday, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Cardinals ownership recently reached out to McCarthy to gauge his interest in their soon-to-be-vacant head coaching job.

According to La Canfora, the Cardinals made clear they would make sweeping changes and give McCarthy say over personnel if he was interested. However, McCarthy does not intend to pursue the opening.

La Canfora says Arizona was willing to part ways with GM Steve Keim to make this happen. Although, with McCarthy unlikely to take the job, La Canfora adds that Keim is “very likely” to be back with the team.

McCarthy, 55, began his NFL coaching career with the Chiefs back in 1993 as an offensive quality control coordinator. He bounced around with the Packers, Saints and 49ers before the Packers hired him as their head coach in 2006.

The Packers made the decision to move on from McCarthy following their disappointing loss to the Cardinals.

During his 13-year tenure in Green Bay, McCarthy has led the Packers to a record of 125-77-2 (61.8 percent), which includes nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title in 2010.
