Chances Of Jadeveon Clowney Re-Signing With Seahawks “Slim To None”

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media said Tuesday an in interview with 950 KJR the changes of free agent DE Jadeveon Clowney re-signing with the Seahawks are “slim to none.”

“The Seahawks had a really strong offer to him,” Garafolo said Tuesday on Sports Radio 950 KJR. “I don’t know how many different kinds of offers there were, but I know there was a one-year offer, from what I’m told. You had me guess at it before and I think I guessed a little high. From my understanding, it was in the $15 million range. He’s still looking in his eyes at $20 million. I know the Browns are involved. I don’t know how intimately involved they are, but from the standpoint of the Seahawks trying to get him done, get him back, they felt like they couldn’t wait anymore. I don’t want to say that they’re out on him because who knows what can happen. Clowney can change his mind and lower his price and who knows what. But I know that they had to move about to a couple of contingency plans with Benson Mayowa being one of them.

“I don’t know that he’s going to be back in Seattle. I would say that the chances are slim to none right now that he’ll be back there. They certainly did whatever they could, and if they didn’t have the strongest offer, they certainly had one that was extremely competitive. Nothing in the realm of what Clowney wants, but nobody’s living in that realm right now, to be honest with you.”

According to Garafolo, Seattle explored several options in regard to bringing Clowney back including potential one-year deals. 

“Unless something drastically changes, I just don’t see it happening,” Garafolo said.

The market for Clowney has been hard to gauge in recent weeks. The Browns have reportedly shown some interest in him along with the Titans. 

The Seahawks signed a pair of veteran pass rushers, but reports had said a return to Seattle was still a possibility, so this comes as a bit of a surprise. 

Clowney was looking for around $20 million per year this offseason, but ESPN’s Dianna Russini said recently that his asking price has moved closer to $17-$18 million a year. 

Clowney, 27, is a former No. 1 overall pick of the Texans back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $22.272 million contract when the Texans picked up his fifth-year option which paid him $12.306 million for the 2018 season. 

Houston franchised Clowney last year before trading him to the Seahawks at the start of the regular season. 

In 2019, Clowney appeared in 13 games for the Seahawks and recorded 31 tackles, three sacks, an interception, two defensive touchdowns, four forced fumbles, two recoveries and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2o edge rusher out of 108 qualifying players.
