Adam Schefter reports that the Chargers are interested in signing QB Philip Rivers to an extension this offseason.
According to Schefter, the Chargers and have Rivers have some early contact, but it doesn’t sound like they’re close to an agreement at this point in time.
Rivers should be in the mix for a similar to contract to the one signed by Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger last week. Roethlisberger secured over $30 million per year in his two-year extension.
Rivers, 37, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004. He was later traded to the Chargers in return for Eli Manning.
Rivers is entering the final year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2019 season.
In 2018, Rivers appeared in 16 games for the Chargers and completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 4,308 yards to go along with 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding a new deal for Rivers as the news is available.
