Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune San Diego writes that the Chargers have โreached outโ to both G Louis Vasquez and CB Antoine Cason regarding possible extensions, but doesnโt say where things currently stand.
Acee believes both players will be able to command $6 million annually on the open market.
San Diego currently has $6.5 million in cap space to work with, so it would be hard to do much more than re-signing one of these two players, unless theyโre prepared to shed some salary.
Acee adds that itโs โdifficult to imagineโ the Chargers keeping either DT Antonio Garay or LB Takeo Spikes next season.
Garay, 33, has $5 million coming his way next season while Spikes, 36, has $3 million remaining on his contract.
Additional saving could come from parting ways with OT Jared Gaither, FB LeโRon McClain, TE Randy McMichael, WR Eddie Royal, and/or OT Jeromey Clary.
Considering that San Diego has both a new general manager in Tom Telesco as well as new head coach Mike McCoy, thereโs a chance that they could look for a complete rebuild this offseason. Thatโs based purely on speculation, but gutting teams from time-to-time can leave them on better footing for the years to come, which is something we saw happen with the Colts this season.
