Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Chargers S Derwin James underwent “successful” surgery on Thursday to repair a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
According to Rapoport, the Chargers will place James on injured reserve before the start of the regular season.
The expectation has been that James is going to miss a good portion of the season. However, he should be a candidate to return at some point in the second half of the season.
James, 23, is a former first-round pick of the Chargers back in 2018. He agreed to a four-year, $12,432,314 contract with the Chargers that includes a $7,121,684 signing bonus.
James’ contract includes a fifth-year option for the Chargers to pick up in 2021.
In 2018, James appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 105 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions, and 13 pass defenses.
