ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Chiefs HC Andy Reid has made the decision to hand over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for Sunday’s game against the Jets, as they try to boost their offensive production.
According to Mortensen, Reid will continue to have oversight of the Chiefs’ offense, even with Nagy now calling plays.
Mortensen points out that this isn’t the first time that Reid has given up play-calling. During his time with the Eagles, he turned the team’s offense over to Brad Childress and he did the same with Doug Pederson while they were in K.C.
A source who spoke with Mortensen explained that the key is to see what happens after the first 15 scripted plays.
The Chiefs got off to an impressive 5-0 start to the season but have surprisingly dropped five of their last six games.
Reid is still supportive of veteran QB Alex Smith, but Mortensen says that Smith will be on a shorter leash based upon his performance against the Jets. Kansas City is reportedly planning to sit rookie QB Patrick Mahomes this year and then place Smith on the trading block next year.
We’ll have more regarding the Chiefs as the news is available.
