Update:
Mike Klis of 9 News is reporting that Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy is still a “strong candidate” for the head-coaching job at Colorado.
According to Renck, the two parties have been in “periodic contact” and there is currently no deal in place.
Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun could be a candidate for the job along with current Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian and former NFL HC Jim Mora Jr, per Troy Renck.
According to Troy Renck, Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy is “not moving forward” regarding the head coaching vacancy at Colorado.
Bieniemy is expected to be one of the top coaching candidates available next year.
Colorado reached out to Bieniemy, a former player and coach at the school, about their head coaching position after the departure of Mel Tucker. Bieniemy happens to be Coloradoโs all-time leading rusher but it’s not the best situation for his first head coaching gig given the uncertainty around recruiting and hiring a staff this late in the process.
Bieniemy, 50, played 10 seasons in the NFL for the Chargers, Bengals and Eagles before retiring in 1999. His NFL coaching career began in 2006 when he took over as the Vikings’ RBs coach.
The Chiefs hired him for the same position in 2013 and he was later promoted to offensive coordinator last year.
In 2019, the Chiefs’ offense ranked No. 6 in total yards, No. 5 in total points, No. 23 in rushing yards and No. 5 in passing yards.
