Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced Wednesday that they’re starting QB Patrick Mahomes for Sunday’s game against the Broncos, per BJ Kissel.
Reid added that he doesnโt have any expectations for Mahomes on Sunday, but he just wants him to get some reps, run, and lead the offense, per Kissel.
The Chiefs are locked into the No. 4 seed in the AFC, so there’s really nothing to play for this weekend and no downside to seeing what he can do with the opportunity.
It’s clear that Mahomes is the Chiefs’ quarterback of the future and he could take over for Alex Smith next year.
Mahomes, 22, was taken with the No. 10 overall pick by the Chiefs after they somewhat surprisingly tradedย upย toย get him inย round one. Inย total, theย Chiefsย gave up first and third-round picks inย 2017 toย go along with another first-round pick in 2018 forย Mahomes.
Some felt Mahomes was the best quarterback prospect in this year’s classย and evenย compared him toย Brett Favre for hisย bigย arm andย gunslinger mentality.
According to OverTheCap.com, Mahomes will receiveย a four-year contract worth $16,425,962, which includes a signing bonus of $10,086,1526. The contract also has a fifth-year option for the team to consider in 2020.
During his college career, Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards while completing 63.5 percent of his passes to go along with 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He also rushed for 845 yards and 22 touchdowns at Texas Tech.
