Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that a clause in Redskins QB Colt McCoy‘s contract includes the option to void his agreement after the season and become a free agent if he starts the final six games.
According to Rapoport, McCoy’s contract includes incentives between 25% – 30% of playing time, which gives him the option to trigger the void. However, Washington has the right to buy back his 2019 year by giving him a raise between $750,000 to $4 million for a total of $7.5 million.
Sources tell Rapoport that had the Alex Smith trade not worked out, the Redskins planned to move forward with McCoy as their starter to go along with a rookie.
McCoy, 32, is a former third-round pick out of Texas by the Browns back in 2010. He was traded from Cleveland to the 49ers back in 2013 and later signed on with Washington as an unrestricted free agent in 2014.
McCoy was entering the final year of a three-year, $9 million contract and set to earn $2.8 million in 2018 when he agreed to a one-year extension worth $7 million.
In 2018, McCoy has appeared in one game and completed 6 of 12 pass attempts for 54 yards and one touchdown. He has also rushed for 35 yards.
