Cowboys DT Gerald McCoy Has Rupture Right Quad Tendon, Out For 2020

Update: Per Michael Gehlken, Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said DT Gerald McCoy has a “ruptured right quad tendon. He’ll be having surgery and he’ll be out for the year.”

Cowboys DT Gerald McCoy appeared to suffer a potentially significant knee injury at practice Monday, according to Ian Rapoport. Rapoport adds it’s believed McCoy tore his ACL.

Michael Gehlken says McCoy went to the ground during individual drills and clutched at his right knee. He was unable to put any weight on his leg while being helped off the field.

McCoy is having an MRI to confirm the injury. Dallas signed the veteran to a three-year deal believed to be worth about $20 million this offseason.

McCoy, 32, is a former first-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2010. He was in the fifth year of his seven-year, $95.2 million contract and set to make a base salary of $13 million in 2019 when the Buccaneers released him last June.

The Panthers later signed McCoy to a one-year deal worth around $8.5 million.

In 2019, McCoy appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers and recorded 37 tackles, five sacks and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 30 interior defensive lineman out of 114 qualifying players.

We’ll have more on McCoy as the news is available.
