Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones mentioned Tuesday that they plan to pick up G Zack Martin‘s fifth-year option in the coming months, per Brandon George.
Jones specifically said that it’s “a big priority for us is to keep Zack around.”
This is hardly a big surprise, considering that Martin has quickly become one of the best guards in the NFL.
The fifth-year option will cost the team more money for the 2018 season, but it’s guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.
Martin, 26, is a former first-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2014. He’ll be entering the final year of his four-year, $8.967 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $1,642,881 for the 2017 season.
In 2016, Martin appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and is rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 3 guard out of 75 qualifying players.
