Cowboys Place Darren McFadden & Jaylon Smith On NFI List, Add 3 To PUP List

The Dallas Cowboys have placed RB Darren McFadden (elbow) and LB Jaylon Smith (knee) on their active/non-football injury list, according to Todd Archer.

  • The Cowboys also placed RB Lance Dunbar (knee), DT Maliek Collins (foot) and DE Benson Mayowa (knee) on the active/PUP list.

Players placed on the active/PUP and NFI lists can return to practice once activated. However, if they remain on PUP list to start the regular season, they would miss at least the first six weeks.

Yesterday, Jason Cole reported that McFadden’s bone scan on his injured elbow came back “good,” and he’s expected to be ready Week 1. McFadden broke his elbow in an accident at home a month ago.

McFadden, 28, is in the final year of his two-year, $3 million contract that included a $200,000 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $1.25 million for the 2016 season before testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent next year.

In 2015, McFadden appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and ran for 1,089 yards on 239 carries (4.6 YPC) to go along with 40 receptions for 328 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 42 running back out of 69 qualifying players.
