Pat Yasinskas ofย ESPN.comย reports that a league source has informed him thatย Saints ILBย Curtis Lofton has agreed restructure his current deal in order to free up some much needed cap space for the team.
The Saints will convert his $5 million dollarย roster bonus into aย signing bonus that will be pro-rated over the remaining years of his contract.ย Lofton had a cap figure ofย $7.1 million that has now dropped toย $3.1 million for the 2013 season.
New Orleans ranked among the worst defensive unit in NFL history last season and this should allow them the ability to target some upgrades during the offseason. They’reย still working to get down to the salary cap limit that’s projected to be close to $120 million, so there’s a good chance more moves will be coming in the next few days.
Lofton, 26, finished last season with 123 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. He figures to stay at inside linebacker even though they’re implementing Rob Ryan’s 3-4 defensive scheme.
