According to Ian Rapoport, Flaherty struggled to implement the new system and it had caused issues for the team this spring.
Barry Jackson confirms that the Dolphins’ decision to fire Flaherty was strictly a football decision and there were no off-field issues.
It’s rare for a team to fire a coach after just six months or so, but it sounds like the issues were pressing enough that Miami felt they had to make the move.
Flaherty, 63, began his coaching career back in 1978 as the head coach at Delone Catholic High School. After several years as a college coach, he took his first NFL job with the Redskins as their tight coach.
Flaherty later worked for the Bears, Giants, 49ers and Jaguars before the Dolphins hired him back in January.
