Dolphins Made Multiple Attempts To Trade For Richard Sherman, One As Recent As Last Month

According to Jason La Canfora, the Dolphins had “considerable interest” in trading for Seahawks CB Richard Sherman this offseason and made multiple attempts to acquire him including one as recently as last month.

La Canfora mentions that Dolphins HC Adam Gase thinks highly of Sherman as a player and upgrading their defense is still a priority for them.

La Canfora adds that Miami made multiple offers for Sherman, but they didn’t lead to longer negotiations.

It’s worth mentioning that the Seahawks have not reached out to other teams about a potential trade and Sherman is no longer on the trade market as of now.

This fits with a recent report from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, who mentioned that the Dolphins and Seahawks discussed a potential trade involving Sherman during the offseason and WR Jarvis Landry‘s name came up.

According to Jackson, the Dolphins admire Sherman, but they were concerned about his age and salary and a trade never materialized. As for Landry, Jackson says that while his name was mentioned, there’s no indication the Dolphins ever offered him in trade talks.

The Dolphins “aggressively” pursued veteran CB Joe Haden following his release from the Browns a few weeks ago and Jackson mentions that Miami remains open to adding a quality corner if something ever materialized.

Trade rumors surprisingly surfaced involving Sherman during the offseason and the Seahawks confirmed that they were at least willing to listen to potential deals for their Pro Bowl cornerback.

However, it became clear that a trade wasn’t going to occur before the start of offseason workouts and there haven’t been any updates since then about Sherman.

Sherman, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He’s currently in the fourth years of his five-year, $58.789 million contract that includes $40 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $11.431 million and $11 million over the final two years of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Sherman would free up $9,231,000 of available cap space while creating $4,400,000 in dead money.

This season, Sherman has appeared in one game and recorded two tackles and no interceptions for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 53 cornerback out of 91 qualifying players.
