Jaguars veteran DL Calais Campbell said Wednesday that there have been talks going on about a restructured contract to lower his $14.5 million cap figure for the 2019 season.
โI think itโs more with restructuring with an extension,โ Campbell said, via John Reid of Jacksonville.com. โThatโs the only way to do it, and thatโs something that was talked about that could possibly happen.โ
Campbell made it clear that he’s opening to working with the team to help them with their cap situation this offseason.
โAt the end of the day, itโs a beautiful game,โ Campbell said. โI love it, and I get paid a whole lot of money to do it, which is even better. As far as restructuring and moving money around, yes sure, thatโs part of the game.โ
Campbell, 32, is a former second-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2008. He played out the final year of his five-year, $55 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed before signing on with the Jaguars in 2017.
Campbell is entering the third year of his four-year, $60 million contract that includes $30 million guaranteed and is set to make base salaries of $12 million and $15 million over the final two years of the agreement.
In 2018, Campbell appeared in all 16 games for the Jaguars and recorded 72 tackles, 10.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a recovery and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 1 edge rusher out of 103 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding the Jaguars and Campbell as the news is available.
