ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Jets are likely to fire GM John Idzik in the coming days after two years with the team.
According toย Mortensen, Rex Ryan’s future with the team could come down to who they hire as their next general manager.
Owner Woody Johnson reportedly “remains fond” of Ryan, but he would prefer their next general manager to ultimately make that call.
Sources tell Mortensen thatย Ryan could askย Johnson for a resolution regarding his status sooner than later.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sportsย has spoken to league sources who all believeย the Jets will be firing HC Rex Ryan and GM John Idzikย in the near future.
Ian Rapoport adds that Ryan believes he’s being fired so strongly that he has been joking around with staffers about it in recent days.ย According to Rapoport, an announcement could come as soon as tonight.
La Canfora points out that consultantย Charley Casserly is reportedly “very high” on Cardinals DC Todd Bowles with UCLA HC Jim Mora Jrย viewedย as a “very strong candidate” within the Jets.
As for potential GM candidates, La Canfora mentions that Texansย scouting director Mike Maccagnan has ties toย Casserly, so this could be something to watch.
The Jets are expected to interview Vikingsย assistant GMย George Paton, Browns assistantย GMย Morocco Brown, Houston director of pro personnel Brian Gaine among others in the coming weeks.
Rapoport reports that the Jets are expected to target aย general manager with more of a personnel background than a financial specialist.
According to Rapoport, anย issue for the Jets could beย the fact that their quarterback situation including inheritingย Geno Smith, as some believe thisย could scare off potential candidates.
Rapoport spoke toย one GM candidate who mentioned that he “has expressed some nervousness” about the situation.
