Adam Schefter reports that the Jets are finalizing a deal with Gregg Williams to become their next defensive coordinator under new HC Adam Gase.
Reports from last week mentioned that the Jets were expected to hire Williams to run their defense. However, there was some late interest from the Redskins that may have caused a bit of a delay.
Williams, 60, has worked for several NFL teams over the course of his career including the Oilers/Titans, Bills, Redskins, Jaguars, Saints, and Rams before the Browns hired him as their defensive coordinator for the 2017 season.
After the Browns fired Hue Jackson, Williams was elevated to interim head coach.
Under Williams, the Browns went 5-3 this past season.
In 2018, the Browns’ defense ranked No. 13 in yards allowed, No. 20 in points allowed, No. 14 in rushing yards allowed and No. 14 in passing yards allowed.
