Jets Notes: Potential Roster Cuts, Free Agents, Draft Targets

Rich Cimini ESPN New York offers some suggestions for the Jets to consider this offseason.

Potential Roster Cuts

Cimini believes the Jets are likely to cut veteran players includingย WRย Santonio Holmes, QBย Mark Sanchezย and CBย Antonio Cromartie due to their huge cap hits for the 2014 season.

According toย Cimini, these player’s cap hits will be:

  • Holmes – $10.8 million
  • Sanchez –ย $13.1 million
  • Cromartieย – $15 million

If the Jets were to release all three of these players, they could have has much asย $40 million in cap space to work with.

Cimini believes the team could look to re-signย Cromartie at a more reasonable salary, despite his obvious struggles this season.

Free Agents

While John Idzik is expected to continue building through the draft, Cimini mentions that he would be “crazy not to be active in the free-agent market.”

Cimini believeย Idzik shouldย re-sign unrestricted free agentsย RTย Austin Howardย and Kย Nick Folkย and then targetย a wide receiver, a tight end and a safety in the free agent market.

As for potential targets, Cimini lists: Broncos WRย Eric Decker, Lions TEย Brandon Pettigrewย and Bills Sย Jairus Byrd.

Draft

Cimini mentions that three names to watch regarding the Jets No. 18 overall selection: USC WRย Marqise Lee, Texas A&M WRย Mike Evansย and UNC TEย Eric Ebron.

However, if one of top quarterback prospects were to fall to them, Cimini ย believesย “they’d have to think hard about going in that direction.”

The Jets were in a really tough position financially at this point last year, which led them to trade CB Darrelle Revis and sign some modestly priced free agents. This year is much different and the Jets could be one of the most active teams in free agency, especially with regards to offensive upgrades.
